The QKSD method works by reducing the exponential $2^N$ Hilbert space into an exponentially smaller subspace using a set of non-orthogonal states which are easy to prepare on a quantum computer. The Hadamard test is used to compute the matrix elements of this smaller subspace which is then diagonalized using a classical method to produce the eigenvalues.
