Capability: Collider Approximations (COL)

Overview#

This capability enables the creation and application of optimized collision approximations for complex mesh geometries in physics simulations. Collider approximations provide efficient collision detection by converting detailed mesh surfaces into simplified geometric representations that maintain sufficient accuracy while dramatically improving performance.

Collider approximations include various types such as Signed Distance Fields (SDF), convex hulls, bounding boxes, and simplified mesh representations. These approximations allow physics engines to perform rapid collision detection without the computational overhead of detailed mesh-mesh intersection tests, while maintaining realistic physics behavior.

Approximations can be configured with different levels of detail and complexity based on performance requirements and simulation accuracy needs. This enables efficient modeling of complex scenarios such as vehicle collisions with detailed car models, character interactions with complex environments, or large-scale simulations with numerous interacting objects.
